I need a crit partner or group or some betas or something. My original fiction needs eyes that don't belong to me and/or aren't in my head, and I need people to tell me what's working and not for them. How do you find those? I don't know how. Every once in a while I see a crit partner matchmaking post somewhere but they're always geared for people with completed manuscripts in the edit phase, which. Lol.
ishie: (music:springsteen // baby it's cold out)
Various irl things conspired to keep me from digging into Yuletide the way I've done in years past, so this is probably the smallest number of recs since I started posting these. (Also, I'm sorry that they don't have notes. All come with a blanket I REALLY LIKE YOU LIKE TOO OKAY.)

And I'd love to read more before or after reveals, if you have any recs to share!

First, though, I got three wonderful Arthurian Mythology gift fics this year--I knew asking for Elaines was the way to go :D I've read them all way too many times already. Hopefully you guys will enjoy them too!

A Disambiguation of Elaines (Scifi AU; very inventive and clever and fun)

The Elaines (a fairy story of sorts; really lovely and imaginative, beautiful language)

Elaine (a 5+1 that plays with the different identities and choices; lyrical and moving)

Recs for 10th Kingdom, 14th Century CE England RPF, 7th and 8th Century CE Mayan RPF, Arthurian Mythology, Attack the Block, The Breakfast Club, Golden Girls, Indiana Jones, House of Cards, Black Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Luther, Great British Bake Off RPF, Selfie, Princess Bride, Veep, Zoolander )

Hallooooooo Yuletide writer! I wasn't going to sign up this year, but, well. Here we are! THANK YOU ALREADY FOR WRITING FOR ME. I can't wait to see what you do. Full stop! Yuletide is full of terrifying and wonderful, and if it tilts too far toward terrifying, or if they make you feel like you have to throw yourself down a mineshaft or pull out your teeth or anything, remember: Optional details are optional! I do go into ... uh, great length here, in case you're the kind of writer who likes a lot of ideas, though.

Here's my annual blanket LIKE/NO LIKE thing: )

But anyway. I'm [ profile] ishie on AO3 if you want to see my fic and past gifts (♥♥), there's older stuff on [ profile] ishieland too, and a terribly organized pinboard and a tumblr that might make you cry with how disjointed and capslocky it is.

If you have questions that this letter doesn't answer, probably the Yuletide mods are the best way to go? But you could probably also ask UH PLACEHOLDER SORRY I FORGOT TO ASK PEOPLE IF IT'S OKAY TO ASK THEM.

So, these requests, in no particular order!

But, seriously, thank you! Happy Yuletide!!
ishie: (Default)
hello there journal people, long time no see! i have a thing for you to fill out so i can put your birthday in my calendar because i am terrible with rememberings:

um, other stuff has happened? none of which i can think right now of course.
ishie: (music:elvis // hunka hunka)
Hello! We matched on some stuff, yay! I'm really really excited about this exchange; when Jess floated the idea I couldn't say LET ME IN fast enough. Above everything else, I hope you have fun writing for Crossovering!!

Some general stuff: I like stories about ladies, and I like stories about dudes, but not stories about dudes at the expense of ladies. Found families are my jam. And I would pay good internet dollars for casefiles. I'm not a real big fan of kink but I'll read anything, basically. My Yuletide letter has more details about my general likes & dislikes if you're interested.

If you have specific questions, since I'm a mod probably contact either [personal profile] galfridian or [personal profile] weasleytook directly instead of emailing? (I probably should have thought about this ahead of time, lol)

This is really long :( but I wasn't sure how to structure it without prioritizing fandoms or crossovers, so I'll talk in general terms about what I like for each fandom instead. I put some notes about each request in my sign-up but don't feel beholden to any of those scenarios! (They're duplicated below if you don't have AO3 handy.)

I'm SO EXCITED to see what everyone does for their recipient. This is going to be so much fun!

Dear NPT

Apr. 28th, 2014 12:10 am
ishie: (fandom:indiana jones // hubba hubba)
Hello! This is my first time doing NPT and ... this is not in any way a hierarchical list. Some of them I've written before; some of them I've had as gifts, gifts that were absolutely great and make me greedy for more. Any of these fandoms would be wonderful to get for NPT! I'm excited to see what you do!!

I like all kinds of stories, from AU to ... well, everything, basically, except I'm not into A/B/O or Mpreg (except in Mythology because, well, of course.). All kinds of tones, all kinds of tenses, all kinds of formats and POVs. Experimental, straight-forward, whatever! I don't truck with sexual violence and abuse for shock value (COUGH COUGH DAN AND DAVE) or with no narrative point.

My standard LIKE/NO-LIKE )

Felicity Smoak, John Diggle
I'm really sorry if you get matched on Any and don't care for these characters, because they're pretty much all I care about on this show. I'm so sorry. But I love them so much! Together romantically or sexually or just friends, after a falling out, pre-series, one of them's dead and it's an angst-fest, boning, whatever. WHATEVER. (Mostly them being adorable and probably boning? That would be so great but I'm aware that's not in everyone's wheelhouse so no pressure!) I'm so in the tank for both of them, together and separate!

Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Ian/Barbara until the end of time. Anything you want. I love them so much. If you want to have other characters from Old Skool Who drop in or drive the thing or whatever, have at it. Adventure, fluff, mystery, horror, whatever. I've never even found any like sexytimes for them but I'm not opposed, really? THEY WERE BONING THE WHOLE TIME RIGHT? Okay maybe not but the point is &IAN/BARBARA;

Circe, Clytemnestra, Medusa, Scylla
I picked the four I'm most interested in, but you don't have to include all of them in the same story!!

Okay, I'm not really a student of Greek or Roman mythology, but I've always been really interested in the pre-Hellenic legends that these stories grew out of, especially the ones that were fundamentally changed to suit the patriarchal culture. BUT ENOUGH ACADEMIC NONSENSE. Basically: what would their stories be if we were told from their POV? They don't necessarily have to be the "good guys" but something centered on them instead of the dudes they encountered would be aaaaawesome.

Nick Gant, Cassie Holmes
I am all about any kind of Nick/ or &Cassie. Please if you go the / route, make it way post-movie, like when Cassie's well into her twenties because otherwise ew. If you go & it could be any time! Pull in from the prequel comic if you'd like, I enjoyed it and wish it had made it to a long-term series. The movie is so entertaining. The plot holes don't get too much bigger on subsequent dozens of rewatches. The atmosphere and world-building is ACES. Stuff about fighting Division, rescuing Cassie's mom, just being powered people together somewhere, whatever! (If you bring in any other characters, I will love you. If you bring in Kira and make her more complex than an obstacle or hindrance, I will love you forever.)

Sansa Stark, Arya Stark, Brienne of Tarth, Lady Stoneheart
I picked the four I'm most interested in, but you don't have to include all of them in the same story!!

Here's what I want: ANYTHING. *chinhands* I ship (aged up) Sansa/Sandor, but you don't have to. I like ladies doing things and making decisions and bearing the consequences and not being ruled by men and dealing with being ruled by men and deciding not to be ruled by men anymore and maybe liking being ruled by men. The key here is that the women do the things. The women are not done to. I want happy endings but am perfectly aware that this is not a series for happy endings, so angst and misery is good with me too!

(After the changes made to the show I've stopped watching so I'd really prefer you stay with book canon if possible. I JUST CAN'T DO THE SHOW'S REALITY ANY MORE BECAUSE IT'S TERRIBLE IN WAYS THAT DON'T ACTUALLY MAKE ANY SENSE. Sorry.)

I meant to come back and give some more promptiness but, really, you can do whatever you want! I'm really excited!!

REMIX REDUX is running again! They're doing voting on fandoms now.

I requested ASOIAF/Game of Thrones, so if you've got 5 500+ word stories OR 7 100+ word stories, want to back me up?

Um, signal boosting would be great, too! I don't even know where fandom lives anymore for anything outside of my Twitter/Tumblr circles. /o/
ishie: (Default)
uh, content warning for references to sexual abuse and assault

so. )

anyway, this will all be proven stupid and wrong tomorrow night!

what's your theory? (obviously if there are comments you should consider that they've got spoilers for all eps up to the finale!)

Here are the things I plan to finish this year.

  1. Zine thing #1
  2. Ship swap
  3. Zine thing #2

  4. Zine thing #3
  5. Seafarer first draft
  6. Revisions on serial killer draft
  7. post-ASOIAF longfic
  8. Sif/Loki bookstore AU
  9. Roman Holiday longfic
  10. ASOIAF wrongfic
  11. Jeremy/Betsy tropefic
  12. ...other tropefics so I don't default again
  13. [redacted original stuff]

Probably there's some other fandom stuff left out. I can't count how many challenges I've defaulted on in the past year or so because I can't remember to keep track of what I'm signed up for. /o\

I don't have a spike (or a desk to put it on really) yet but I am racking up the original writing rejection slips, which is pretty exciting! An acceptance would be way more exciting but my original stuff just isn't there yet. It's a much harder set of muscles to flex than I thought.

I'M DOING [ profile] wipbigbang!

But. Uh, nasty noncon ASOIAF I've been so ashamed of writing I haven't finished it for more than a year? Or VEEP fic I've been trying to write for a year but keep getting stalled on? Or ... I forget what my other option was. Oh, long-dead Molly Hooper hiatus fic or Downton—

You know what: let's do a poll!

Ugh that Dre is supposed to be in strikethrough >:(
ishie: (fandom:push // in this together)
What an ugh of a day. Had to decline to pursue two jobs last night because of pay and commute and time commitment issues, and got a notification this morning that Dream Job will not be mine. I just want to land somewhere. I'm tired of trying.

Snowflake Day Three

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

I actually had three recs from Yuletide that I couldn't find the right words for before reveals:

Anagnorisis: The Odyssey fic, about Odysseus learning how to fit in at home again and Penelope letting him

Persistence: Ötzi the Iceman, wow, what a fantastic tale this is: Ötzi trying and failing to cross the mountain, and somehow being aware of the world he's brought back into

Disremember: Push (2009), NOT Nick/Cassie but gen, neat take on how Nick has to be brought back to the truth again

2014 plans

ishie: (fandom:doctor // don't do that)
It's been a long time since I had a year worth being proud of, writing-wise, so I'm hoping to turn that around in 2014. I've signed up for [community profile] inkingitout, Trope Bingo, and the Extreme Big Bang, so am planning to finish a lot of WIPs that have been lingering in drafts.

0 / 150000 words. 0% done!

I've also got a thread at the anonymous feedback meme (&CONCRIT;)*, and if you want to use the January writing meme to leave fic prompts, feel free!

*I 100% agree with whoever said they disagree with my Firefly characterizations. I do too now, lol.
ishie: (Default)
(Did I do some overwhelmed and delighted heavy breathing when I saw who wrote Yuletide gifts this year? YOU BET I DID. *________________*)

I wrote two things for Yuletide!

Each In Its Own Way for [ profile] silksieve
Roman Holiday (1953) (Princess Ann/Joe Bradley); G; 3100 words

Maybe derailed trains and bar brawls weren't the most glamourous of subjects to cover, but Joe Bradley was back in New York at last. Somebody up there was looking out for him. He had a steady gig at the Brooklyn Eagle, complete with a desk and a telephone and a press card to hang out of his coat pocket should the need ever arise. He typed up his little items of general interest and filched matches from the editor's desk, both of their feet kicked up as they lied to each other about all the generous and beautiful women they'd known.

Well, almost all of them.

Post-canon fix-it that I wish I could have made about 17000x longer. I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH THEY TOOK IT OFF NETFLIX AND I'M GUTTED EVEN THOUGH I OWN IT.

We Just Decided To for [ profile] hellolamppost17
Go On (TV) (Lauren, Steven, Ryan; kind of Lauren/Steven-ish); G; 1800 words

Lauren tried not to panic. This was do-able. She could still totally do this. She could get out of the wedding. They hadn't exhausted all the options yet. "You know what? You can't tell him. I can't tell him. This is a sign from the universe! I'm going to have to cheat on him."

"That's— Um. Is that really the only option left here?"

Goes AU during Lauren's bachelorette party in 1x21. It's John Cho's cheekbones' fault! I had a lot of fun writing this, even as I successfully fought the urge to put a bunch of Eli Manning jokes in (TOO SOON!!!).
ishie: (fandom:breakfast at tiffany's // get up)
Sure, fine, state of the union things are an in-the-new-year/looking-forward thing. Let's do it like it's not.

I'm not doing any amnesty fic dumps this year. Everything that would have been included is destined to be reworked for other pieces, so.

my thread here

ishie: (fandom:leverage // &hardisonnnnnnn;)
Ugh, December. So let's try this for January!

Pick a date below and give me a topic. It can be anything from fandom-related to irl to pizza preferences to whatever you want.

They will probably be brief, or not, depending on the subject.

Also, I reserve the right to decline prompts that I don't feel equipped to meet.

Topics: you can get an idea from my tags/from the stuff I usually ramble about/from things you maybe wish I talked about more but don't.
I'm carrying over all the ones I didn't get to this month. (I'm so sorry.)
