The new rules won't effect the fandoms I plan to ask for (except Night Vale. R.I.P. Intern Dana fic I'll never get), but if I had planned to write for Greek Mythology or one of a hundred different things, I'd just give up on Yuletide. This seems like a short sighted move that might have been more tenable if there'd been some rationale behind it presented other than "OMG IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE YOU GUYS."
I'm starting to look at alternative holiday exchanges. I like the warm fuzzies that come from writing gifts for other people even if I don't get anything in return. Do you know of any other exchanges aside from Fandom_Stocking that aren't fandom specific?
It has, but sometimes I feel like the sass and hellfire has gone out of fail-fandomanon.
I just saw the rules update. I'm glad that they reconsidered the two noms rule. One of the fandoms I'm going to request, the Longmire novels, might not have gotten in if it stood. I don't think they're going to budge on the characters. The baby is going right out the window with the bathwater on this one. I've never done fandom_stocking, but I think it'd be pleasant if some of us could get together on it. The barrier for entry doesn't look too high, so it seems like a pleasant and low key exchange.
I'd be surprised if someone didn't come up with an alternative to Yuletide given the character tagging wank.
I actually promoted that exchange on a WTNV tumblr I was maintaining for a while. I'm too afraid of fucking up the tone to ever write WTNV fic and no one is around to goad me into it anyway.
Between Fairy Tales & Related Fandoms being ruled (probably rightly) ineligible, and Elementary being (very very WRONGLY) DQ'd, I've pretty much lost my enthusiasm for Yuletide before it even starts.
Arthuriana is the one that's knocked me out. What's the point of a rare fandom exchange when your rules are designed to disqualify rare fandoms who only have a presence during your exchange? This ludicrous character restriction aside, the amount-of-fic rule does not make sense in an annual exchange beyond a certain point--if a prompt hits some kind of zeitgeisty need and generates a huge number of fics in a single year, it could knock that fandom out of all future exchanges, whether the totality of the fic is within the last five years, or an archiving of long-dormant activity, or crossover/fusions that have little to do with the actual source. I just do not get this. And if all of it is, as I suspect, to preserve AO3's flawed-from-the-start tagging hierarchy, then it's really not a fest I want to participate in anyway.
Yeah, that's super-bullshit too. So basically, lovers of retellings that only get love during YT should hope that any media retelling fails miserably?
I wonder how a suggestion to exclude fics written *for* Yuletide from the minimum number would go. I know it can be done, and probably simply, but... *hands* Part of me vaguely remembers this being discussed a few years back, and it was shot down with extreme prejudice.
Sucks for comic book fandoms because I suspect based on a very cursory reading, stuff like the current Hawkeye series will be ineligible based on the presence of Hawkeye in the movie, or Captain Marvel will be ineligible because the Tony/Steve flock tags every character that appears in half a scene, or or or...

The new rules killed half of my planned requests, so I'm out if they don't reconsider. I've never done fandom_stocking but I'd like to! Have you?
I'm sure more alternatives will bubble up in the next couple of weeks!
