recs the second (yuletide 2013)
(BUT FIRST DID YOU READ MY GIFT FICS)
30 Rock
just happy accidents
(Wesley Snipes); G; 4000 words
He gets a happy ending :D :D :D :D :D
Bob's Burgers
The Santa Trap
(Louise, Tina, Gene, Linda, Bob) G; 2300 words
BURGER OF THE DAY
Happy Hollandaise
with Canadian bacon
A future Belcher holiday celebration. Yes. Perfect.
Broadchurch
A Bluer Sky
(Ellie Miller, Alec Hardy) G; 2400 wrods
The only thing I wanted after this show ended was a) all the fluff in the entire world, forever and ever and ever; b) [abject weeping]; c) no, seriously, ALL THE FLUFF AND BUNNIES AND HUGS AND COTTON-CANDY CLOUDS. This really hits the spot, although it certainly doesn't shy away from the bruises left from the events of the show.
I Don't Have These Answers
(Ellie Miller/Alec Hardy) T; 2800 words
And if you prefer your post-s1 more on the bruised side, this is your fic. Plus also they fuck. Yay fic!
Dirty Dancing
Through Every Open Door
(Johnny, Baby, Penny) G; 2900 words
Really post-movie, like decades or more, and I'm sorry I can't blurb anything because I'm too busy crying just thinking about it again.
Galaxy Quest
Unsurprising
(Guy Fleegman) G; 1800 words
“Guy Fleegman,” he tells the other man in the waiting area, “Thought about changing my name to something sexier. But someday, Guy Fleegman is going to be synonymous with sexy.”
If you say you didn't wonder where this fic was all your life, okay, you are clearly not me.
SMOF
(OMC, Brandon Wheegar, Fred Kwan, Laliari) G; 3200 words
SEQUEL. TELL ME THIS IS A LEAKED TREATMENT OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEQUEL. THE ZINE.
New York City (Anthropomorfic)
Steady Light
(Chrysler Building, Empire State Building) G; 1100 words
A day in the existence of the Chrysler Building.
Imaginative and meditative. I keep saying things are so lovely but there's no better word for this one.
NFL RPF
It's Only Weird Because It Did Work
(Eli & Peyton Manning) G; 2100 words
It's not Eli's fault that he and his brother are connected on the astral plane.
I spent most of the fic unsure whether I wanted to cry or laugh, tbh. Eli! Make better choices! Pay attention to what you're doing!
The Cutting Edge
Moves in the Field
(Douglas Dorsey/Kate Moseley) T; 3300 words
Walter Dorsey isn't quite sure what his brother sees in Kate Moseley, but he suspects her magnificent slapshot may have something to do with it.
I don't really have anything to add to that. Great Walter voice, and I was instantly transported to the world of the movie.
The Mindy Project
Choosing Me (Or The Kelly Taylor Principle)
(Mindy/Danny) T; 3700 words
Instead of going to Haiti with Casey, Mindy pulls a Kelly Taylor and chooses herself, which results in dry streak a mile wide. Like, how fair is that?
All of the Mindy fics were hilarious and/or adorable this year but this one really stood out for me because it would have meant ZERO Casey in s2. IF ONLY.
love in the time of appetizers
(Mindy/Danny) T; 2300 words
And this one, which had me by the throat at you would know that a good neighbor relationship starts with asking their name, which of the Marx Brothers they flirted with during the Depression— and would not let me go.
Veep
Hand in Unlovable Hand
(Amy/Dan) T; 11000 words
The one where Amy and Dan get married in Vegas and then turn those lemons into career lemonade.
I really almost stopped reading Yuletide after this one because this one hit so many satisfaction buttons. Perfect voices, perfect character-logic.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
One Of Their Better Parties, GOB/Tony Wonder, G
I love when Michael is shown to be the worst of the Bluths, as he arguably is. This is what I wanted after season four and it's really in the tone of all characters involved. Really adorable, too. Part of why I love GOB/Tony is how they are absolutely adorable together. Like high school sweethearts but middle aged, washed up, creepy men?? IDK, it works.
BROOKLYN NINE NINE
a distinct lack of tutus, Diaz/Santiago, T
Rosa and Amy go undercover at a gay bar. Pretty obvious and direct a premise, but it's really great. The dialogue and voices are SPOT ON.
Bribery Will Get You Everywhere, Peralta/Santiago, G
Peralta goes home for the holidays with Santiago. I JUST HAVE WEIRD FEELINGS ABOUT PERALTA AND HIS WEIRD SAD FAMILY LIFE. This one is cute but also hit all the buttons in that area especially. ALSO: Banter! With a capital b.
Hands, Peralta/Santiago, M
Jake and Amy go undercover as a married couple at a hotel retreat. Bed sharing, fake dating, bickering, etc. This is long and gloriously in-character the whole time. I was NOT anticipating loving this so much because I thought it'd be pretty straightforward and plain, but wow, do they nail it 110%.
ELEMENTARY
And Only Time Will Tell, Gen, G
HIGH SCHOOL AU. Everything I ever wanted but never knew for this fandom. Wow they fit right into these roles. It was great!
Hark The Herald Reptiles Sing, Gen, G
CLYDE!!! I know other things happen, I know it was really good, but that's the real win here, for me. Nothing says Christmas spirit like Clyde in the spotlight.
The Hellhound of the Rockefellers, Gen?, T
SLEEPY HOLLOW CROSSOVER! This is very intriguing and really well-suited. I loved these two shows paired after the adorableness of their writers' rooms on Twitter, so I was already game. But the main pairings/characters are all very similar and make for a really fluid and well matched crossover. ALSO SHERLOCK INTERACTING W/ ICHABOD. I mean. Whether you're a fan of the original fiction both shows are based on or not, it's just a delight.
THE HEAT
Brass in Pocket, Mullins/Ashburn, M
Mullins and Ashburn spend the holiday with Mullins' family. GOD I ADORED THIS. I mean for the voices alone, it's worth reading, but I found it really good beyond that. I just love when fic from comedy fandoms is actually funny enough to make you laugh out loud.
LEGALLY BLONDE
Serious, Elle/Vivien, E
I mean. This was another example of something I can't believe I never thought I'd want to read. But wow, it was fantastic and great and totally worth a read.
THE MINDY PROJECT
Ten Thousandth Try, Mindy/Danny, M
Groundhog Day tropes are the best tropes of all. This is such a delight and right in the wheelhouse of the fandom. Moves along really quick, too, which is sometimes untrue of sitcom fic. I enjoy that because again it feels very true to the characters and context.
